NORTHERN CALIFORNIA DOGS

Fostered between San Francisco and Redding

Name: SCOUT

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Black & White
Age: 4-5 years old
Size: Medium

SCOUT is a happy-go-lucky girl, who loves everyone she meets--people or dogs, even cats. She is about 4-to-5-years-old &, as you can see, likes her doggy kibble. Nonetheless, she is active & especially likes to go places with her foster mom in the car. Scout would be a wonderful companion dog, enjoying walks & hanging out with her new family. She is quiet & easy-going. She is crate-trained & housebroken.

If you'd like to meet SCOUT, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about this darling girl or to inquire about adopting her, please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

Name: VINNIE B.

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Red & White
Age: 6 months old
Size: Medium

Vinnie (Vinnie B. for Vinnie Boy) is a 35 pound 6 month old Border Collie mix. He is a typical Border Collie puppy with all the smarts, energy and curiosity. He loves playing with every toy he can get his paws on as well as with his border collie hostesses. If left alone for anytime, he will have every toy out of the box and scattered all over the house. He has really taken to fetch, both with the tennis ball and frisbee. Vinnie is very friendly when meeting new people but can try to be a tough boy when out on his walks and encountering new dogs. He has learned to use the doggie door in record time and had no accidents in the house. He will chase anything, including bugs in the yard. I would not suggest placing him in a home with small children, cats or a family who does not have experience in raising a young Border Collie pup who is full of nothing but energy and curiosity. Vinnie is crate trained but it is not his favorite place. He settles down very nicely and is one of the sweetest young boys you will ever meet. He knows the basic commands, sit, down and come but will benefit significantly from obedience training and will be a great fit into an agility program or household with lots of activity. Vinnie is current on all his shots, neutered and heartworm negative.

If you would like to hear more about this great little guy you must have an approved application on file. Please contact Catherine or Michael 530-886-0730 or mchoffman@ncbb.net

Name: DORA

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Black & White
Age: 2-3 years old
Size: Medium

DORA is a sweet, spayed, black & white female.    We’re not certain of her age, but we think she may be about 2-3 years old.  She is small-to-medium sized, weighing about 35 lbs.   DORA has been a very well behaved guest at her foster home.  We’ve only heard her “alarm” bark a few times, crates nicely at night or in the daytime, and is housebroken.   She very much wants your approval and loves to be petted.   She likes to rest her head on your lap or curl up next to you, as she is doing now while this is being typed.

Initially DORA was somewhat dominant with a couple of the dogs here, but has worked her way nicely into the pack.  She now tussles and romps with the younger dogs and generally respects the boundaries of the older ones.   While curious of Lucy Cat, DORA has not chased after her or caused her to become alarmed, including having been nose to nose with her a couple times.  Lucy Cat typically sleeps on the sofa while the dogs play on the floor nearby.

All in all, DORA is a young, sweet, happy dog with a typical young BC’s curiosity and need for daily activity.  DORA is current on her vaccinations, is heartworm negative and on preventative.

If you'd like to meet DORA, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

Name: TANNER

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 1 year old
Size: Medium

TANNER is a 1-year-old bundle of smiles.  Really.  This dog is always happy & smiling.  He loves everyone he meets.  He is energetic & how, so he probably wouldn’t be the best choice for a first-time BC home or for a home with little children.  He’s a sweetheart, but he’s busy & on the go.  He is agile & fast, even as he is on the small size.  Tanner learns quickly, so he will be a blast to train.  Tanner is working on his reactivity to other dogs.  He wants to be dominant in a pushy way.  While he has not been aggressive with the dogs in his foster home, he has been a bully of sorts.  We are working with him to help him understand what is appropriate & inappropriate when he’s around other dogs.  For these reasons, we recommend that he go to a home with BC training experience or an only dog home.  Tanner also likes cats a bit too much!  Overall, this little guy is a delight, & he will thrive in a positive, training-oriented home.  He will need exercise & stimulation, too, to be the best dog he can be.

UPDATE ON TANNER: Tanner LOVES toys & water!  He enjoys balls & all kinds of tug toys & will entertain himself with them or play with his foster mom.  He likes to play in his wading pool, too.  He's making great progress in his obedience class, & has learned--on leash & with a cookie--heel, sit, down, come, turns, & a finish.  He's working on stay!  His attention to other dogs in class is much better.  He maintains eye contact with his foster mom during the social circle & during figure eight exercises where he comes close to other dogs.  And he's beginning basic familiarization on the agility equipment, which he really likes.  This little guy really wants a fun job & to do something with someone.

If you'd like to visit with Tanner, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about him,  please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

she gets to go on walks & spend time with her people.

Lottie would enjoy an adult home where
she could be doted on.

Name: LUCY

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Black & White

Age: 1 1/2 - 2 years old
Size: Medium

LUCY (AKA I LOVE LUCY) is a softie.  She is about 1.5-to-2-years-old & weighs about 35 pounds.  Lucy has a long, thin body, & long, skinny legs.  When her foster mom is not saying to her: “I love Lucy,” she is singing “Who’ll take the girl with the skinny legs?”  Lucy loves all the attention & silliness she can get!  Lucy’s former owners didn’t have time for her, but she has a real desire to please & is smart as a whip.  She worries when she first meets someone, especially when she’s in her crate in the back of her foster mom’s van, but once she sees you with someone familiar or she gets to know you, she’s a wiggley, silly girl.  It helps if you give her a treat!!  Lucy gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home & seems to get confidence from them.  And she’s been fine with the cats.  She needs a home where someone will work with her a bit on confidence-building.  She is crate-trained & hasn’t had an accident in his foster home.
If you'd like to visit with Lucy, you must have an approved application on file.

To learn more about her or to inquire about adopting, contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org or 530-899-8022.

FLOWER is a small wildflower at 30 pounds, a little whisp of a thing.  At 9 months, she is awfully close to full-grown.  She is sweet & impish, very friendly, loves everyone she meets.  Her tail never stops wagging.  She is crate-trained & hasn't had an accident in her foster home.  She likes toys & chew treats; well, she likes treats of all kinds, so she should be an easy girl to train.  She is gentle, even as she is very active.  Flower loves to go places, so she'd be a great traveling companion.  And she's not a barker at all!!!

If you'd like to visit with Flower, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about him, please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

Name: CALLIE ROSE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Callie Rose is now being sponsored “For the Love of Cody, Tammy and Harley”

Female

Tri-Color
Age: 4 years old
Size: Medium

Meet Callie Rose – a true diamond in the rough! Her past years were spent producing puppies for profit – now she’s ready to enjoy her own life! She spent most of her time in one small pen, so everything in the big world is new and a bit scary until she gets used to it. But what a darling she is – when she conquers her fear of you, she snuggles and kisses. She learns fast too. She already uses the dog door, and comes when I call her name, with a grin on her lips and waggling her whole body till she looks like a pretzel. She’s now relaxed enough to take food from my hand too, so training will start today. She loves her crate, travels fine, and seems to be house trained. Even when at her most frightened, she showed no signs of aggression. Her behavior with my other dogs is entirely appropriate – not much interested in playing with them, but greets them pleasantly, and growled (no snapping or snarling) appropriately at my bouncy pushy male Aussie when he got right in her face. Most surprising – she has tremendous herding/prey drive – whining and trembling when she first noticed my goats – you can see her stare in the photos.

This girl will need an experienced Border Collie person – she will do best in a quiet household as sudden movements and noises still frighten her – with someone who has the patience to train her gently and positively and at the same time harness her herding drive to some kind of job (agility, obedience, herding,…). I wouldn’t recommend a household with cats or small children. She is truly a blank slate waiting for someone to develop her potential – I’d do it myself if I could keep another dog because I think she’s a little miracle just waiting to happen.

Callie Rose has a nice short to medium length double coat.  If you'd like to meet Callie Rose, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Jen at k9jazz@gmail.com.

Name: MARBLE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Marble is now being sponsored in honor of Laddie and Jezebel.

Male

Black & White
Age: 1-2 years old.
Size: Medium

MARBLE
The first time you look into Marble's face and see his unmatched eyes with
multiple colors you know immediately how he got his name! Marble is a young
(approx. 1 to 2 year old) male sweetheart shorthaired Border Collie. He is
friendly and somewhat playful.

Marble is a special little guy.  Marble will come up to you and sit quietly
and patiently, waiting for attention. He's sweet as he can be with everyone,
except for cats & other smaller creatures. He enjoys toys, (likes to squeak)
and plays well with other dogs. He wrestles and even plays tug-of-war with
their rope type toys (he usually wins too since he¹s pretty strong).

A veterinary orthopedic surgeon has evaluated Marble. Apparently Marble's
front paw was crushed at some point. It doesn't cause him pain, but his leg
has shortened from lack of use while it was healing. He carries it (holding
it up) most of the time, most of that is habit, because when he forgets or
is too busy he uses it perfectly, especially in running or playing.  He uses
his leg so much more than he used to. This leg issue doesn't really slow
Marble down. While he doesn't have the endurance of most BCs, he is quick &
likes to run & play.

If you're looking for a good companion dog, one that loves to learn & to be
with you, Marble is your guy.

If you'd like to meet Marble, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

Name: CHARLIE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male -

Black & White
Age: ~ 1 year old.
Size: Medium

Meet Charlie, a rangy young intact (we'll take care of that)  male short-coat BC who comes to us from the Madera shelter.  Charlie is affectionate, playful and crate-trained.  He's also a budding ball dog, based on our first trip to the dog park this morning.  He caused a bit of a stir among the neutered multitude upon his arrival, but took the increased curiosity in stride and made no attempt to flaunt the stature associated with his extra parts.  He's a very cool and adaptable young boy who knows his name already, and has demonstrated great recall.  He's got a quick, leaping stride when he runs.  Charlie's a little scrawny at 38 lbs., and will likely fill-out a bit.

If you are interested in Charlie, you must have an approved application on file. Contact Tom 925.837.8788 or email tfcmail@gmail.com.

We are now accepting applications for these adorable puppies.  Their mother was rescued from an animal shelter on March 18th and the puppies were born the next day.  Their mom was a stray so we don't know her history.  Mom is definitely purebred and the pups look purebred too, although we can't say for sure.  Mom is very sweet, extremely obedient and appears to have some natural herding instincts.  If the pups grow up to be half as sweet as their mom, they will all be wonderful companions.  Since we get lots of applicants for our litters of pups, please send us an email inquiry and specify your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice of pups.  We will review all applications and will be deciding on the best home for each pup.   If you don't have an application on file with us, please submit one as soon as possible.   These puppies have been so advanced.  At two weeks of age, they were climbing out of their puppy box and starting to growl and bark.  They started eating solid food at 3 weeks of age and they are very friendly - none of them hanging back when someone comes to see them.  They love to play with their toys.  They are paper trained and they're doing very well now, going outside through their doggy door to go potty.

Please send your email to clansmen@bcrescuenc.org

Name: NOTCH

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 3 months old
Size: Medium

Notch is an awesome puppy, his litter came into the Merced shelter as
strays. 5 days after coming into the shelter I stumbled upon him, I
immediately saw that male puppy #2 was a special dog, he was calmer,
friendly and outgoing. He immediately approached me tail wagging giving
kisses and moving into a sit position for pets. Notch is a Velcro pup,
he started responding to his new name first time it was used and will
come from the other room when called. Notch is a very social puppy and
is continuing his socialization, he has done well with all sorts of
strangers, he greets every stranger no matter who they are with a big
tail wag. He gets excited and wags his tail whenever he sees the leash.
Notch goes to the bathroom outside on his own and hasn't had any
accidents inside his kennel area, he alerts with a whimper and a pee-pee
dance/pace. He uses his "Natures Miracle" puppy training pads in the far
corner of his kennel to go pee on at night. He is not used to walking on
grass and more accustomed to going on concrete but used the lawn for the
first time yesterday. He sleeps inside of his warmed crate at night with
the door open, the crate has his favorite blanket, his stuffed animals
and a warm water bottle under the blanket, he also has a ticking clock
on top of the kennel which really helps him sleep at night. It took him
a couple days to learn how to take treats from my hand but will now take
them from my hand and will sit for his treat.

If you are interested in meeting Notch, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Mike at michael@w2c.net.  Notch is being fostered in Stockton.

Name: LANDON

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 1 year old
Size: Medium

There is not much more to say about Landon other than he loves people,
this guy is very out going and is quick to greet and bond. Landon is a
very polite dog and knows to sit when greeting a new person then lifts
his paw to give them a hand shake. He also responds to the command "Give
me some paw". Landon is a very mature 1y/o medium energy companion
(6/10). Landon would be most happy in a home were he could get nonstop
attention, he's the classic velcro dog.

Landon does great in the car and loves going for rides, in public he
wants to greet every passer-by he sees. Normally when he sees someone he
doesn't know, he'll stare at them and if they continue to ignore him
he'll go into a sit position and give them the Jedi mind trick with a
lifted paw. Landon does very well on a leash and long line single and
tethered to a second dog. He did very well with the children he has met
on leash but one 5 year old got scared when Landon tried greeting with
his traditional paw up, hand-shake. On Landon's days out, he is very
attentive to where I am at and is normally ready to pass out after 1/2
mile walk around the park. He has shown curiosity with ducks and cats he
has come across but didn't display much chase/ prey/ herding drive with
them.

Landon would most likely do best in a single dog home or a home with the
right canine partner and owner. He seems very outgoing and gets excited
when he sees smaller dogs, under 30lbs and he easily melded with my
dominant 34lb Eskie/Golden Retriever. Landon has had an issue dominance
issue with his previous foster brother but it was mostly resolved by the
time Jack was adopted. Currently, Landon is doing excellent, he adopted
the new puppy, from day one Landon took it upon himself to welcome and
comfort the new puppy. He constantly wants to be around the puppy and
the puppy has enjoyed the extra attention and cuddling. Landon has also
made progress meeting new stranger dogs and has made several friends who
had the patience to get past his energetic and sometimes loud greeting.
He does bark and needs work with stranger dogs walking across the street
while he is sitting at the coffee shop. He is starting formal
socialization and training classes within the next couple weeks.

Landon is very easy to control around the house and has great manners,
he loves to cuddle and watch TV and will run up to the TV and sit 2 feet
in front of it when Animal Planet or the Dog Whisperer is on. Landon
appears house-broken with rare accidents, he hasn't started alerting to
go outside yet, he has showed minimal destructive tendencies like
mouthing the occasional exposed power cords and has occasionally torn up
paper/magazines. When I catch him with something like a piece of paper
he will hand it to me as soon as I ask for it. Before starting formal
classes he knows the sit, down, drop it, leave it and stand, "co-mon",
slow and finally the "give me some paw" commands, he also responds to my
personal whistle and click commands.

If you are interested in meeting Landon, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Mike at michael@w2c.net.  Landon is being fostered in Stockton.

Name: CLOONEY

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Red & White
Age: 1 year old
Size: Medium

Meet Clooney, a handsome, rangy, yearling neutered male who was recently "clipped and chipped" at the Martinez shelter.  He has done very well in the day I've had him -- traveling well, communing appropriately with the incumbent four males and one female (despite the fact that male hormones take several weeks to dissipate from his system, and he must also smell intact to them).  He crated up well, if not voluntarily, overnight with only mild later complaint.  He did very well at the dog park today, as well, stretching his legs and rejecting several invitations from other males to tussle.  He is very affectionate, both here and soliciting people at the dog park, he knows a few rudimentary commands and responds very well to correction.  He may/may not be thoroughly house-trained, as there's a certain amount of marking that's typical for a new boy; he did poop outside.

He had passed his temperament test at the shelter with Bs and Cs -- excellent marks for a BC under their very cautious protocol.  He became available to us when they used him to test a lab's dog-on-dog instincts on-leash in a small room.  The lab jumped him, and he apparently answered back in defense, so both of them flunked.  Sometimes what they do there is incomprehensible to me,  but it's our gain, and his.  To my amateur eye, this is a very good border collie -- a classic both physically and by his nature.  His medium coat is a deep, rich chocolate brown and his markings are quite beautiful.  I'll write more as I get to know him better.

If you are interested in meeting Clooney, you must have an approved application on file.

Update on Clooney:  As a yearling male, he is full of himself, and occasionally gets in a mild argument at the dog park.  He's an excellent instinctive herder, strong and a little nippy, but not obsessive.  He continues to be exceptionally companionable one-on-one, and settles down well in the house.  He could be a very good herding trials dog, or a fine family pet.  His photos don't do his good looks justice.

Name: BILLY

(Click on picture for more photos)

"Billy is being sponsored in loving memory of Irenne and the many wonderful days we spent at the beach."

Male

Black & White
Age: ~1 year old
Size: Medium

Meet Billy, a yearling neutered male BC/cattle dog cross with interesting wavy fur.  Billy's tongue and tail are too long, and his ears sometimes stand straight up, all of which lends him a comic air.  He really does want to please, and is endearingly affectionate.  He is crate and house-trained and is relatively low energy around home, assuming he's had his daily workout at the dogpark.  He has a strong herding drive, but is not particularly interested in ball-chasing -- he'd rather chase the dog who's after the ball.

Billy is somewhat immature in that he still squats to pee, despite several older male role models around here.  He also tends to want to playfully (his word) nip at dogs he's chasing, which tends to annoy them.  He accepts regular correction by them, as he also shows that legendary cattle dog persistence.  In a prior foster setting with another Rescue, Billy also picked-on an ancient female incumbent -- so I would recommend that if he lives in a multi-dog household, the other dog(s) be willing to put him in his place.

I am trying to spend daily training time with Billy, as I have a hunch that his dawning maturity, together with that eagerness to please, will pay real dividends.  So, he's a little headstrong now as befits his age and breeding, but he'll likely make a great and loyal companion and running buddy.

If you are interested in meeting Billy, you must have an approved application on file.

Name: SPREE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Black & White
Age: 1 year old
Size: Medium

Meet Spree, a yearling newly-spayed female who makes up in chutzpah what she lacks in stature.  I pulled her from the adoption bays in Martinez on Wednesday, so my understanding of her is incomplete, but she seems very human-social and friendly -- with dogs, not so much.  I think some of that may be initial settling-in, as she has begun to play with Tootsie -- roughly her age and size (26 lbs), today (Friday).  She has been quite assertive with the other dogs; the males just mostly look away in a kind of henpecked resignation -- including Buddy, who outweighs her by a factor of three.  The females are less tolerant, and we've had a few "getting to know you" sessions.  She is crate-trained and knows about stairs, so I assume she may have been an in-house dog.  I've not yet seen her foot speed, as she can't quite yet go to the dog park, but her reactions are quick-as-a-cat.  More soon, and happy to respond to specific inquiries!  Mo' better pics soon, as well.

Update: 9/14 Spree has settled-in very nicely.  She has learned her place around mid-pack, and flare-ups are few and far-between -- she romps and plays well with Tuxie and Jazz, now that Tootsie has departed for her new home.    She's affectionate and attentive to training -- a little mouthy, but that's improving, too.  She does well at the dog park, demonstrating a significant, though not obsessive or obnoxious herding streak.  Her reactions are cat-quick, and she runs with a kind of a leaping stride.  Very good agility candidate, methinks, given her speed and lack of mass (26 lbs).   And, she crates-up well for the night.   She is progressively endearing herself to me and mine, and that bodes well for how well the adoption will "wear."

If you are interested in meeting Spree, you must have an approved application on file.
