NORTHERN CALIFORNIA DOGS

Fostered between San Francisco and Redding

Name: PISTOL

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Black & White
Age: Born ~5/22/09
Size: Medium

PISTOL is a 6-week-old Border Collie mix puppy, & we have no idea
what she might be mixed with.  She is a very active, confident,
social puppy, with all the BC smarts.  Nothing phases this little
girl!  She was picked up stray & she hasn't seem the least bit
worried or intimidated by anything since she's come into rescue.  We
think she's a blast, a real "pistol."  She is too young to go home;
she'll be available on Saturday, July 18th, but we'll be reviewing
applications until then.  We expect she will be a smallish BC mix,
probably about 30 pounds.

If you'd like to be considered for Pistol, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about this darling puppy, contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org.

Name: KELSEY

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Tri color
Age:  5 years old
Size: Medium

Check out Kelsey's videos:

Pt 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVvk5xYjW1k

Pt 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuZjEsGy5vI

Pt 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NUdoBOiBC4

KELSEY is a little bird. She simply cannot catch a toy unless she can get some air. She is nuts for Frisbees and any toy that can be tossed in the air. She is very agile and it is apparent that in her previous life, she’s had training. She sits, lays down, stays, and will give her paws. She even rolled over! She is 100% potty trained and can be left in the house or yard with at least a 6’ secure fence. See, this girl can easily clear a baby gate or a 4’ fence from a stand still. She did this when she wanted to be with me instead of staying in a room by herself. Kelsey mastered the doggie door on day one. She is very sweet and cuddly, but just loves to get busy and work those toys! She is very cute and wiggly and will chirp in excitement during play. She’s even done some flips even though I’m trying to make her go easy until she’s conditioned to be ready for that much of a challenge.

I have a really bossy wenchy female that has jumped Kelsey a couple times and while Kelsey will defend herself, neither of the girls has done more than scuffle. Kelsey has no interest in the other dogs, she is way more focused on the job of playing with toys. She would do fine with a dog who is not like my female. She would probably be ok with other dogs and by herself. As you can see from the little youtube clips, she is very focused and will drop toy and back up and drop just like a typical herding dog. I think she has more Kelpie than McNab (both cousins to the Border Collie) along with Border Collie in her.  Kelsey needs to go to a home without cats!

When I first went to the shelter to evaluate her, she was completely shut down as if she was on a really heavy sedative. She would let you pet her, but you could tell that her mind was on wondering when her owners were going to show up for her. She was so depressed that the shelter could not put her up for adoption in her current state. They begged rescue to take her for her one and only chance. Her teeth were full of tarter and her nails were so very long. She even had an eye injury that has completely healed. This gal has been through a complete makeover and her personality really shows how great she feels now!

Kelsey is spayed, up to date on all vaccines, is microchipped, on heartworm and flea prevention.

She is being fostered in Sacramento area.

If you are interested in meeting Kelsey, you must have an approved application on file. For more information, please email everythingk9@yahoo.com

Name: APRIL

(Click on picture for more photos)

April is now being sponsored as a tribute to "Scout", from Jody and Kent Morales

Female

Black & White
Age: 1-2 years old.
Size: Medium

APRIL is a 1-to-2-year-old Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog girl.
April is all puppy--utterly silly, bounding everywhere on her way to
wherever she is going.  April is sweet & loving with everyone she
meets.  She's a happy-go-lucky girl.  April is crate-trained, but we
don't know about housebroken.  We are fairly certain that she lived
outside before she came into rescue.  When she first came inside, she
acted as if she had never crossed a threshold before.  She goes in &
out happily now!  She does everything happily now!  April has had
little-to-no training, but we think she'll be a blast to train
because she has such a good-natured enthusiasm.  She is a great size,
about 40#, & she's very athletic.  April is keen about the chickens
in her foster home, so she'd probably do better in a home without
chickens or other small animals like cats--she hasn't been cat-tested
formally.

If you'd like to meet April, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about this darling, silly girl, contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org.

Name: TAHOE BEAR

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 1 year old.
Size: Medium

Tahoe Bear is a 1 year old neutered male. He is the sweetest, smartest most confident Border Collie Aussie Mix who seems to just love life and everyone and everything he meets whether it be human of any size, canine and feline. We call him Tahoe because of his gorgeous blues eyes. He is a healthy medium size boy weighing about 45 lbs. He has a velvety soft thick coat that you can't help but want to just love all over him. Tahoe is VERY affectionate and eager to please. Tahoe loves to play ball, keep away and pull with his Border Collie hostesses. He plays nicely with the other dogs and is even bringing back the ball and frisbee now. Tahoe is very content finding a toy and entertaining himself or just curling up by your side. He is what I would call a velcro dog, he always wants to be with you. Tahoe loves taking his daily walks and is getting much better on the leash even learning to sit and stay. He will benefit greatly from some consistent obedience training and will learn very fast as most Border Collies do. Tahoe does not have the typical Border Collie intensity and settles down very nicely into his crate. Tahoe is housetrained, never had an accident inside and uses the doggie door like a pro. He loves to ride in the car or take a ride in the boat. He shows no signs of being destructive. Tahoe is heartworm negative, current on Heartgard and all his vaccinations.

If you would like to meet Tahoe Bear, you must have a approved application on file. For more information please email Catherine and Michael at mchoffman@ncbb.net or call 530-886-0730. Tahoe is being fostered in Auburn, CA which is about 30 miles North East of Sacramento off Interstate I-80.

Male

Black & White
Age: 3 years old.
Size: Medium

MARBLE is a 3-year-old boy who came into rescue with a seriously damaged foot. The injury happened a long time ago, & the foot healed badly. His right front leg shortened, which made movement painful for him. He's recently had his front leg amputated, & he's getting around beautifully. He runs & plays, & is a typical rambunctious Border Collie. Marble is a wonderful companion dog. He loves people, & is good with other dogs. Marble is not good with cats or chickens. Marble is housebroken & crate-trained. He is neutered, heartworm negative (& on preventative), & is current on his vaccinations.

If you'd like to meet Marble, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

CENTRAL CALIFORNIA DOGS

Fostered between San Francisco and San Luis Obispo

Name: BENNY

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age:  1-2 years old.
Size: Medium

Meet Benny, our newest boy from the Martinez shelter, brought out on Tuesday 6/30.  Benny is a 1-2 year-old newly-neutered male with a significant case of "shelter shock."  He's tall and handsome, and quite strong.  His personality is solicitous and gentle with humans and he appears to love kids.  He's been a bit overwhelmed with the recent changes to his life -- including the shelter (where he was graded "rescue-only" in a cursory, kennel-only temp-test), his surgery, coming here with an overload of other collies (we always have to stretch a bit around July 4th, as the shelters are deluged), and a bath just before these pics were snapped.  He has a bit of localized dry-skin dermatitis, which we'll handle directly and by building up his health and resistance with diet and exercise.

I will write more as his personality emerges from the fog, but we wanted you to know he's in the system.  Benny is fostered in Danville, in the East Bay SF.

If you are interested in meeting Benny, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please email tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Name: BINGO

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Red & White
Age: 8-10 weeks old
Size: Medium

♫ Here’s a pup that needs a home, and Bingo is his name-o;
B I N G O – B I N G O – B I N G O – and Bingo is his name-o;

Poor little guy, one leg was broke, and Bingo is his name-o;
B I N G O – B I N G O – B I N G O – and Bingo is his name-o;

Found on the street in Modesto, and Bingo is his name-o;

B I N G O – B I N G O – B I N G O – and Bingo is his name-o.

Leg’s all healed – look at him go! and Bingo is his name-o!

B I N G O – B I N G O – B I N G O – and Bingo is his name-o.

We can only guess Bingo’s age; it is likely that this Border Collie mix is not even 3 months old. He is very smart though – he learned his name quickly and is doing really well with his crate-training, even at such a young age. As with most pups this young, Bingo lives to eat, play and sleep. This little guy does not let his foster mom’s one year-old mutt rest for a minute. Bingo is super fast and exhibits Border Collie traits (such as nipping at other dogs’ ankles). However, he responds quickly when his human buddies communicate their dislike at receiving puppy love bites.

Bingo was picked up off the streets in Modesto. The shelter vet noted that Bingo’s front left leg had been broken and had heeled “funny.” Other than being slightly crooked, Bingo does not even slightly favor his left leg, and it clearly does not hinder his ability to run and jump. He is just a happy, fun, sweet little guy; he is also “high energy” and super fast. Bingo will need to go to a home where there are adults who are knowledgeable and prepared to take on such a young spirited puppy, as he will need the consistent and committed training that all puppies require and deserve. Bingo will thrive in a home with at least one other dog – one that is young and active.

If you are interested in giving Bingo a wonderful home, you must have an approved application on file with BCRNC. Bingo is being fostered in San Francisco and his foster parent can be reached at (415) 377-0370, or by e-mail to dpcragg@sbcglobal.net.

DIESEL is an adorable "borderline" Border Collie puppy, with a personality that won't quit!!!!  He's mixed with another breed, maybe Beagle, and he's cute as a bug!  At nine weeks, he weighs about 9 pounds.  He uses a doggy door and sleeps in a crate during the night.  He loves people, other dogs, and just about everything else!!!!

Female

Black & White
Age: Born~3/1/09
Size: Medium

DEMI is another adorable "borderline" Border Collie.  She is so small, the shelter thought she was only 8 weeks old when they contacted us to rescue her.  Her teeth however, show Demi to be around 4 months of age.  Her head and coloring makes her look like a Border Collie but she is long and low, suggesting she is mixed with either Corgi or Dachshund!  Demi is very sweet, uses a doggy door, sleeps in a crate through the night with no accidents, and hasn't made a sound since coming into rescue.  At four months of age, she only weighs around 9 pounds!!!!!  If you are looking for a tiny girl, with Border Collie looks and smarts, Demi is the one!!!!

To visit with petite Demi, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about her or to inquire about adopting, please email bcrncinc@aol.com

Name: JAKE

Male

Red & White
Age:  4 years old.
Size: Medium

Meet Jake, a sturdy, four-year-old (soon-to-be-)neutered (but don't let on) male redeemed from the Modesto shelter on June 26.  Jake is a very nice, responsive BC-mix (+ Brittany?).  He's clearly missing someone, but he has settled-in well, gets on well with the local incumbents, has good recall and is a quick learner.  I call him Jakie because of his gentleness and companionability -- somehow the "ie" seems to fit him.  He's a good ball dog, and he met other males, included other intact males, without incident at the dog park on first visit.  Jakie crates up well at night and is house-trained.  He solicits others for patting and moves into your hand affectionately. Cats unknown.

Jake is fostered in Danville, in the East Bay.

If you are interested in meeting Jake, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please email tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Name: MILKBONE "LADY"

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Red Tri
Age:  3 years old.
Size: Medium

Okay, so her name is really "Lady," but she's the spitting image of the cover dog on the biscuits box.  Lady is a spayed, three year-old BC-Aussie cross who was surrendered to the Healdsburg Animal Shelter.  She was not doing well "in captivity" without sufficient outlets for exercise and socialization.  She is perfectly house-trained, crates without objection, travels well and has been appropriate with her new pack -- sniffing, playing and warning as needed to establish her place in it.  She is an enthusiastic ball dog.  Lady was routinely overfed in her prior home (4 cups/day?!) , which accounts for her stockiness -- and it's my impression she may have gotten less exercise than she'd prefer (we'll fix that).  She has been affectionate with people, she has good recall and has shown no restlessness or digging.  I am told that she repulsed a workman who came into her yard unannounced, and that she was given-up as a result.  Her owners also reported that she was fearful of loud noises -- I haven't yet seen that.  She's only been here a few days, but has adapted so well that I believe she'll be a very good family dog.

Lady is fostered in Danville in the East Bay.

If you are interested in meeting Lady, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please email tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Name: JESSIE

(Click on picture for more photos) Jessie is now being sponsored “For the Love of Cody, Tammy and Harley”

Female

Black & White
Age: ~ 5 months old
Size: Medium

Jessie is a sweet Border Collie/Lab mix about 5 months old.  She is one of eleven pups that were found starving under an abandoned house.  With loving care she is now a healthy, happy young lady.  Jessie does well with other dogs and will do very well in a home with other active dogs.  She now lives with six Border Collies – she loves them and they love her.

Jessie is spayed, current with her shots, is house trained, and will eat like a horse.

If you'd like to visit with JESSIE you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about her, please contact (henrylosee@mac.com) and include "Jessie" in the subject line of your email to bypass our spam filters.

Name: RITA

(Click on picture for more photos)

Rita is now being sponsored "on behalf and in memory of little Ginger, my constant companion for 12 years".

Female

Tri-Color
Age: 6-7 years old.
Size: Medium

RITA is a 6-to-7-year-old tri-colored sprite. She is small, under 30 pounds, and she is at a good weight. She is crate-trained and hasn't had an accident in her foster home. Rita is a very active dog. She loves to run & to play. She has an impeccable recall. She is reactive to other dogs when she's in a kennel situation, but she has been utterly appropriate when loose with other dogs. If a dog gets in her face, she will respond, but also responds to being told to stop. She would do okay with another dog, if they have a chance to meet and especially if the other dog is a more submissive male. Rita will thrive in a home that provides stimulation and exercise, lots of fun things for a Border Collie to do.

To visit with lovely Rita, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about her or to inquire about adopting, please email bcrncinc@aol.com

Name: DOMINO

(Click on picture for more photos)

ADOPTION PENDING!!!!!!

Domino is being sponsored by Jack, another wonderful Border Collie who was rescued by Fay and Wayne.

Male

Black & White
Age:  4 years old.
Size: Medium

DOMINO is a gorgeous 4-year-old boy, who acts like a puppy.  Domino
is a bit larger than some of the other BCs we have in rescue,
weighing about 50 pounds.  He is active & athletic, but not intense,
unless it's about cats, so a "no cat home" is a must for this
fellow.  Prior to coming to rescue, Domino lived in a home with two
of his littermates, & he didn't get as much one-on-one time with his
person as Border Collies crave.  He had learned to rely on his
littermates, but now he's learned to trust & love his foster mom, &
he wants to do the right thing.  He is a soft, goofy boy that will
need further training & socialization to be the best dog he can be.
He has a nice, deep bark that he uses to announce someone has come to
the house, but he stops barking immediately when he is asked, & he is
NOT a nuisance barker.  Domino is crate-trained, & he hasn't had an
accident in his foster home.  This is a dog that needs to be
someone's special boy, & to learn how to be a Border Collie again,
getting to do the things BCs like to do.

If you are interested in meeting Domino, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please email tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Name: MOUSE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Check out Mouse's video

Mouse is now being sponsored "In loving memory of "Snowdonia".

Male

Black & White
Age: 8 months old
Size: Medium

Meet Mouse, a tiny 8-month-old, recently-neutered male pup whose is a bad news/great news story.  He came into Martinez shelter as a stray, limited to gamely limping on his front legs and scraped-up all over from having been hit by a vehicle (bad news).  The resident vet and foster coordinator worked to determine the scope of his several injuries, including fractures to both femurs at the hip joint.  They then contacted us to offer that, if we could take him into our pack, the vet would perform the needed bilateral FHO surgery that promises to restore his mobility.  Great news, tempered only by the fact that we hoped they would find him a regular tail to attach while they were busy with his other hindquarters requirements.   We took him in a few days post-surgery.  His activity level has been substantially limited in the early stages of his recovery, but he does put weight on both rear legs and he is quickly regaining strength.

He's a sweet-natured little guy, needy at present, but quite calm when hanging out with the pack, settling into the local routines and even playing gently with Tuxedo.  We are working on his weight -- he came in at a very scrawny 21 lbs., and will probably top-out under thirty.  He hated his e-collar, which came off today.  He is bright, alert even on post-operative drugs, friendly and well-socialized to the other local canines.  He is fostered in Danville.  We will update his recovery from time-to-time, or his foster family may be contacted at tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Folks who read these descriptions regularly may be aware of my occasional exasperation with shelter operations, particularly as regards temperament testing.  That said, I want to express our appreciation to the Martinez Staff for going well-beyond the call-of-normal duty to give this good little boy a second chance at life.  Thanks -- we are very pleased to take it from here!

UPDATE:  Mouse has continued his remarkable recovery from bilateral hip surgery, and will be an energetic, fully-functioning playmate for some lucky family.  He has added muscle and strength in his hindquarters, walking and running normally.  He only reverts to the modified bunny-hop at top speed, but that may evolve, as well.  He is a lean, healthy 25-pounder with very good human and dog sociability and house-training manners.  Mouse is appropriate with larger dogs, standing his ground in measured ways.  He travels and settles down in the house well, on his favorite dog bed.  He will benefit from some leash-walking work.  We will try to get video posted at youtube to show Mouse in action.

He is fostered in Danville, in the SF East Bay.

If you are interested in meeting Mouse, you must have an approved application on file.

Name: LADY

(Click on picture for more photos)

"Lady is now being sponsored in memory of Gavin"

Female

Black & White
Age: ~7-8 years old
Size: Medium

LADY is another dog that was found by animal control at the home of a deceased man (see story above with Honey's description).  Lady must have been on the fat side to begin with because she wasn't as emaciated as Honey when she was discovered.  She's a little thin now but weighs 34 pounds and is very healthy - even if she has a lot of gray on her face!  Lady has a medium length coat which is very easy to care for.  Lady is housebroken and uses a doggy door.  She is also crate trained.  It takes Lady a little while to warm up to people but it will just take her some time to learn to trust again.  She gets along with other dogs although she likes to tell them off sometimes and keep them in line.  She'd probably prefer to be an only dog or be partnered with a male dog.  Lady is spayed and fully vaccinated and ready for adoption.

If you are interested in Lady, you must have an approved application on file. For more information please contact bcsaver@aol.com

Name: CALLIE ROSE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Callie Rose is now being sponsored by Diane Ostrem, Cotonwood, CA

Female

Tri-Color
Age: 4 years old
Size: Medium

Meet Callie Rose – a true diamond in the rough! Her past years were spent producing puppies for profit – now she’s ready to enjoy her own life! She spent most of her time in one small pen, so everything in the big world is new and a bit scary until she gets used to it. But what a darling she is – when she conquers her fear of you, she snuggles and kisses. She learns fast too. She already uses the dog door, and comes when I call her name, with a grin on her lips and waggling her whole body till she looks like a pretzel. She’s now relaxed enough to take food from my hand too, so training will start today. She loves her crate, travels fine, and seems to be house trained. Even when at her most frightened, she showed no signs of aggression. Her behavior with my other dogs is entirely appropriate – not much interested in playing with them, but greets them pleasantly, and growled (no snapping or snarling) appropriately at my bouncy pushy male Aussie when he got right in her face. Most surprising – she has tremendous herding/prey drive – whining and trembling when she first noticed my goats – you can see her stare in the photos.

This girl will need an experienced Border Collie person – she will do best in a quiet household as sudden movements and noises still frighten her – with someone who has the patience to train her gently and positively and at the same time harness her herding drive to some kind of job (agility, obedience, herding,…). I wouldn’t recommend a household with cats or small children. She is truly a blank slate waiting for someone to develop her potential – I’d do it myself if I could keep another dog because I think she’s a little miracle just waiting to happen.

Callie Rose has a nice short to medium length double coat.  If you'd like to meet Callie Rose, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Jen at k9jazz@gmail.com.

Name: BILLY

(Click on picture for more photos)

"Billy is being sponsored in loving memory of Irenne and the many wonderful days we spent at the beach."

Male

Black & White
Age: ~1 1/2 years old
Size: Medium

Meet Billy, a yearling neutered male BC/cattle dog cross with interesting wavy fur.  Billy's tongue and tail are too long, and his ears sometimes stand straight up, all of which lends him a comic air.  He really does want to please, and is endearingly affectionate.  He is crate and house-trained and is relatively low energy around home, assuming he's had his daily workout at the dogpark.  He has a strong herding drive, but is not particularly interested in ball-chasing -- he'd rather chase the dog who's after the ball.

Billy is somewhat immature in that he still squats to pee, despite several older male role models around here.  He also tends to want to playfully (his word) nip at dogs he's chasing, which tends to annoy them.  He accepts regular correction by them, as he also shows that legendary cattle dog persistence.  In a prior foster setting with another Rescue, Billy also picked-on an ancient female incumbent -- so I would recommend that if he lives in a multi-dog household, the other dog(s) be willing to put him in his place.

I am trying to spend daily training time with Billy, as I have a hunch that his dawning maturity, together with that eagerness to please, will pay real dividends.  So, he's a little headstrong now as befits his age and breeding, but he'll likely make a great and loyal companion and running buddy.

If you are interested in meeting Billy, you must have an approved application on file.
